Subaquatic archeology now plays an important part in the discovery of our maritime history and in revealing the secrets behind mysteries which began long ago.
Divers engage themselves in the fascinating and inspiring search for shipwrecks. While exploring, divers can use SCUBA diving equipements (untethered underwater breathing device) to swim down to the bottom of the St-Lawrence River or they can send a VTO (Telerobot vehicle) or other similar types of submersible devices. Sometimes, more specialized equipements and formation are necessary, while for other shipwrecks, a standard certification is all that's required and, of course, true love of maritime history.
Getting to learn more about shipwrecks begins while divers are still on-shore. Subaquatic archeologists search through archives, libraries, books & newspapers in order to determine exactly what they are looking for, and where the wreck might be located. When under water, they make drawings, take notes, measures and pictures of the shipwreck and other objects surrounding it, while observing the effects of the ocean and sea life on the vessel.
