Centre National des Naufrages du Saint-Laurent

A tourist attraction you can't miss...

Late winter 1994, Mr Marc Tremblay, amateur diver, discovered in the cold waters of l'Anse aux Bouleaux, in Baie-Trinité, artefacts which allowed to recover the wreck of the Elizabeth and Mary, a ship which belonged to admiral William Phips' fleet and came to attack Quebec City, in 1690. The discovery became one of the most important and rewarding as much by the quality of it's artifacts preservation than by the quantity of parts that were pulled up from the bottom of the St. Lawrence River.

The Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications, together with the Groupe de préservation des vestiges subaquatiques de Manicouagan, have elected the "Phips shipwreck" as the best preserved discovery and the most important of our history. With the wreck of the fleet of Admiral Hovenden Walker, in 1711, near Pointe-aux-Anglais, and the wreck of the Corossol, in 1693, at Sept-Iles, this discovery recognises that the North Coast has on its littoral the three most ancient shipwrecks in the history of the New World.

With this spirit, The Centre National des Naufrages du Saint-Laurent de Baie-Trinité kicked off in June 2004, and is located 95 km East of Baie-Comeau, on the North Coast.
